If you are in need of a flat place to ride your bike, here are three, one in each part of town. There are LOADS of other potential riding routes to ride, and the best way to find them is often to ride with others, especially experienced riders. Depending on your level of ability on the bike, I’ve listed a few regularly scheduled group rides that you might check out when you’ve got the time.
Look out the maps for some of the rides:
Parmer Lane:
For you Northerners, Parmer lane might be a good alternative. You can head west past Mopac, even past 620 to get some good open roads, relatively flat, with good shoulder. Until you are west of 620, there is a good deal of traffic and lights, but once you are beyond 620, it’s almost idyllic. You’ll face a few rolling hills, and, a lot of potential wind. Parmer ends at 1431.
Group Rides:
Saturday mornings, Bicycle Sports Shop meets for rides at 9 AM (watch for the time to change as summer draws near through.) Starting location alternates between north and south stores. See the website for more details: www.bicyclesportshop.com or call them. This is an intermediate ride, so if you are brand new to riding this may not be your ride.
Thursday nights the Austin Flyers host workouts from the Veloway from 6:30 PM to dusk. Rides begin once daylight savings times ends. All levels of ability are welcome. You’ll find both very new and very experienced all attend this training session.
Austin Cycling Association:
They offer many free rides on Saturday and Sunday’s. Consult their website or free newspaper to find out more about these events. Austin Cycling Association
