The Iliotibial Band (IT Band) is a fibrous band of tissue that extends from the Tensor Fascia Lata (TFL) muscle across the knee and attaches to the Tibia. The TFL controls the IT Band and without it the IT band would not function. These two structures work together in supplying lateral stability to the knee.
Most runners know that the IT Band can cause pain on the outside of the knee but it can also cause the following:
• Hip pain
• Locking knee
• Instability in the knee
In order to properly treat this issue several structures need to be addressed. These areas include the gluteal muscles, lateral quad muscles and calf muscles. Treatment may include ART, Trigger Point, stretching and strengthening of these areas.
